Why use this tool

Runs on your device

The AI processes images locally in your browser — nothing is uploaded, nothing leaves your computer. No file size limits, no queue.

Fast processing

Once the model loads, most images finish in 1–2 seconds. You are not waiting for upload bandwidth or server queues.

Completely free

No signup, no watermarks, no credit card. Process as many images as you want — there is no limit and no paid tier.

Two modes included

Quick for everyday images, Pro for fine details like hair and fur. Switch anytime — both are free.

How it works

The technology behind Background Remove is a neural network compiled to WebAssembly, running inside your browser through the ONNX runtime. Here is the process from start to finish.

1. Select your image

Drag a photo onto the tool or click to browse. PNG, JPEG, and WebP files are all supported. There is no size cap — though larger images take longer to process.

2. AI separates the subject

The model scans your image and classifies every pixel as either foreground or background. This is the same type of model used in professional editing software, compressed to run efficiently in a browser tab.

3. Download the result

You get back a PNG with a transparent background. Drop it straight into Photoshop, Figma, Canva, a presentation deck, or wherever you need it.

The first visit downloads the AI model — roughly 30 MB. After that, your browser caches it. Return visits and repeat uses are near-instant.

Quick vs Pro

Both modes use the same underlying architecture. The difference is model size and detail quality.

Quick — Default

Lightweight model, fast results

ISNet quint8 — a quantized model that processes images in 1–2 seconds. Great for product photos, portraits with clean backgrounds, and simple compositions.

Pro — More detail

Larger model, finer edges

ISNet FP16 — full-precision model with sharper results around hair, fur, and complex edges. First use downloads extra data, then it's cached.

You can switch modes at any time. Run an image through Quick first — if the edges are not sharp enough, click "Try Pro mode" to reprocess the same image with the larger model.

What you can do with it

Removing a background is usually the first step in a larger workflow. Here are a few ways people use the tool.

E-commerce and marketplaces

Clean product photos convert better. Drop your product shots here, get a PNG with a transparent background, then place them on a white or lifestyle background for your store. Works for eBay, Amazon, Shopify, Etsy, and any other platform.

Professional profiles

A clean headshot without a distracting background looks more polished on LinkedIn, company about pages, and speaker bios. Remove the background, then add a solid color or keep it transparent.

Marketing and design

Isolate a product, person, or object for a presentation slide, a thumbnail, a social post, or an ad. Having the subject on a transparent layer gives you full freedom to composite it onto anything.

Personal and creative projects

Cut out yourself, your friends, or your pets for stickers, memes, invitations, and collages. The tool works on anything — not just professional use cases.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tool free?

Yes, completely free. No signup, no watermarks, and no limit on how many images you can process. There is no paid tier — everything you see is available to everyone.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. All processing happens directly in your browser using on-device AI. Your images never leave your computer — not to our servers, not to any third party. You can disconnect your internet after the page loads and the tool will still work.

How does the background removal work?

The tool uses a neural network that runs in your browser via WebAssembly and the ONNX runtime. When you drop an image, the model analyzes it pixel by pixel to identify the subject and separate it from the background. The first visit downloads the model (~30 MB), which is then cached by your browser for future use.

Which mode should I use, Quick or Pro?

Start with Quick. It works well for most images — product photos, portraits, simple subjects. If the edges around hair or complex details are not clean enough, click "Try Pro mode" to reprocess the same image with the larger model. Pro downloads additional data on first use, which is cached afterward.

What file types are supported?

PNG, JPEG, and WebP images can be processed. The result always downloads as a PNG with a transparent background.

Does this work on phones and tablets?

Yes. The tool works in any modern browser including Safari on iOS and Chrome on Android. Processing speed depends on your device — recent phones handle it in a few seconds, older ones may take a bit longer.

Why does it take longer the first time?

The first visit downloads the AI model to your browser — approximately 30 MB. This is a one-time download. Once cached, subsequent visits and image processing sessions are nearly instant.

Can I use the results for commercial work?

Yes. You own your images and the results. Use them for e-commerce, marketing, client work, or anything else. There are no restrictions.
